The Mental Health Mission Midlands Translational Centre (MHMTC) is a demonstrator site of the national NIHR funded MH- TRC Mission, which aims to make the UK a sustainable and research-ready environment that can support the pace and scale of mental health research needed to address current needs. By partnering with the NHS, researchers, and industry, the MHMTC will work to bring the latest innovations in mental health care to those who need it most.
MHMTC is a partnership between the University of Birmingham, University of Nottingham, Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and aims to accelerate mental health research capacity by developing digital registries, building on regional leadership and facilities, and supporting the development of new industrial partnerships.
The MHMTC will initially focus on precision interventions for early psychosis, mood disorders and children and young people’s mental health within the context of a superdiverse, deprived population.

Our Goals
- Partnering with Industry: The MHM will work closely with businesses and researchers to speed up the development of new ways to diagnose, monitor, and treat mental health conditions.
- Expanding Research: We’ll build on the UK’s existing strengths in mental health research, making sure that even more parts of the country can benefit from cutting-edge science, especially in areas with high levels of mental illness.
- Creating a Supportive Environment: By improving systems and removing barriers, the MHM will make the UK an attractive place for companies to invest in mental health research.

How we're Making a Difference
- Demonstrator Sites: We’re launching special research sites in Birmingham and Liverpool. These will work closely with industry to develop and test new treatments and approaches.
- Work Streams: These are national programs focusing on specific areas of mental health research. They’ll work with our demonstrator sites to increase research activity and bring innovations to patients more quickly.
