Working With Industry
Through partnerships with the NHS, researchers, and industry, the Mental Health Mission (MHM) aims to accelerate the delivery of innovative mental health solutions to those who need them most. By working closely with industry, the MHM is dedicated to advancing new methods for diagnosing, monitoring, and treating mental health conditions, improving outcomes for people across the UK.
How We Work with Industry
The MHM’s ‘Working with Industry’ theme is focused on creating long-term, strategic industry partnerships and overcoming barriers in mental health research to ensure faster progress. This includes building a robust infrastructure designed to support diverse stakeholders from pharma, technology, and device sectors. Together, these partners will shape a clinical ecosystem where innovations in mental health care—whether in medication, digital tools, or medical devices—can be efficiently translated into real-world settings.
To drive early success, MHM will initially prioritize research in mood disorders, psychosis, and mental health care for children and young people, with plans to expand into areas such as eating disorders and substance misuse. Drawing from established centers of excellence, the MHM also aims to strengthen research capabilities across all regions of the UK.

Patient & Public Involvement
Public Partnerships
Public Partnerships, also known as ‘Patient Public Involvement and Engagement’ (PPIE) refers to a collaborative partnership between researchers and the public, where the public is involved in all aspects of the research process as partners.
Involvement can include being a part of activities such as working with the funders, providing advice or perspective, assisting in the development in research materials, or being involved in interviews. Engagement can look like ensuring that the public is informed of the research process and outcomes, as well as providing input.
The benefits of PPIEP is that it helps ensure that research is relevant to the needs of the public, meaning that the publics’ voice is heard. Another element of PPIEP is ‘co-production’ which is a type of PPIEP where the public is recognised as having equal skills and knowledge in designing and delivering the research – much like the co-designed nature of the EPICare project and the Difficult to Treat Depression digital platform (for more info see Research)

Psychosis
Involvement of experts by experience has been a critical component of the EPICare project since its inception as a research idea. At the pre-application stage, EPICare was brought to the Institute for Mental Health Youth Advisory Group (YAG) – a diverse group of young people with lived experience of mental health challenges and/or supporting someone with lived experience of mental health challenges. A series of meetings with the YAG supported the team to understand the value and viability of the project from a public perspective, with input shaping various aspects of the study approach – for example, how to best involve experts by experience in the delivery of the project.
Children & Young People
Our work with children and young people aims to establish a UK-wide system for early-stage mental health research, focusing on improving the measurement and tracking of mental health needs among young people. By leveraging innovative digital tools, we seek to attract industry support and develop more effective treatments for children and teenagers across diverse communities. Our key goals are to establish a Youth Advisory Group (YAG) and to create a platform for early-stage mental health trials and standardizing methods to measure and monitor symptoms and biomarkers.
Long Term Depression
The Midlands PPIE group for adults has concentrated on the Mood Disorders workstream, with a special focus on long term depression (LTD). LTD affects nearly a third of people with major depression and is marked by resistance to conventional treatments like medication and therapy. Our group of contributors with lived experience of LTD has been instrumental in the development of a specialized digital platform designed to capture complex datasets on LTD. This consolidated information allows researchers to identify connections, investigate causes, and develop more effective treatments at an accelerated pace, paving the way for future trials.

Working with the NHS: Supporting mental health research in the Midlands
The Midlands Mental Health Mission (MHM) is committed to enhancing mental health research across the region by expanding infrastructure and fostering collaboration. Key initiatives include the development of a new Clinical Research Facility (CRF) at the University of Birmingham, aimed at advancing research in areas like early Psychosis and long-term Depression. The mission also provides access to a skilled team of Clinical Studies Officers (CSOs) to support participant recruitment and data collection, ensuring research studies can run efficiently. Additionally, the mission emphasises the growth of future clinical researchers through Principal Investigator (PI) training and the Midlands PI Development Network, offering resources, peer support, and training to empower NHS clinicians in leading impactful research studies. Together, these efforts aim to transform mental health care in the Midlands through innovation and collaboration.

Mental Health Mission Midlands
The Mental Health Mission Midlands Translational Centre (MHMTC) is a demonstrator site of the national NIHR funded MH- TRC Mission, which aims to make the UK a sustainable and research-ready environment that can support the pace and scale of mental health research needed to address current needs. By partnering with the NHS, researchers, and industry, the MHMTC will work to bring the latest innovations in mental health care to those who need it most.
MHMTC is a partnership between the University of Birmingham, University of Nottingham, Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and aims to accelerate mental health research capacity by developing digital registries, building on regional leadership and facilities, and supporting the development of new industrial partnerships.
The MHMTC will initially focus on precision interventions for early psychosis, mood disorders and children and young people’s mental health within the context of a superdiverse, deprived population.
